What is a Wrap document and do I need one?

Short answer: A wrap document is an ERISA plan document that combines insurance policies and benefit contracts into a single ERISA-compliant plan, and it is commonly used to satisfy ERISA documentation requirements for employers offering benefits.


A wrap document is a type of ERISA plan document that “wraps around” existing insurance certificates, benefit booklets, or administrative materials to form a complete written plan that meets ERISA requirements. Insurance carriers typically provide certificates of coverage or policies, but those documents alone usually do not satisfy ERISA’s requirement for a formal plan document.

By incorporating these underlying benefit materials, a wrap document establishes required ERISA terms such as plan eligibility, plan sponsor information, plan administration, claims and appeals procedures, and participants’ rights under ERISA.

Employers often use wrap documents to combine multiple welfare benefits (such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, health FSAs, or HRAs) into a single ERISA plan. This approach can simplify plan administration and, for larger plans, may allow benefits to be reported under a single Form 5500 filing rather than multiple filings.

ERISA does not require employers to use a wrap document specifically, but it does require most private-sector employers offering health or welfare benefits to maintain a written plan document and provide a Summary Plan Description (SPD). A wrap document is a common and practical way to meet those requirements, particularly when benefits are provided through multiple carriers or vendors.

Whether a wrap document is appropriate depends on the employer’s benefit structure and compliance approach. ERISA documentation requirements are enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor, which expects covered plans to be supported by complete and accurate written plan materials.

About ERISA

ERISA sets standards for retirement and health benefit plans in private industry to protect individuals in these plans. The law was passed in 1974, but it is still applicable today as it creates compliance requirements for employers of all sizes that offer group health insurance benefits, particularly egarding plan management and employee communications.
