What types of expenses can I use my HSA for, tax-free?

March 27, 2025March 28, 2025

You can use HSA funds tax-free to pay for IRS-qualified medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, and your tax dependents—even if they aren’t covered under your health plan.

🩺 Common Qualified Expenses Include:

  • Doctor visits, hospital bills, lab tests, and surgeries

  • Prescription drugs and insulin

  • Dental care (cleanings, fillings, braces)

  • Vision care (eye exams, glasses, contacts)

  • Mental health and substance abuse treatment

  • Chiropractic care and physical therapy

  • Certain over-the-counter (OTC) medications and menstrual products

  • Medical equipment like crutches, CPAP machines, and blood pressure monitors

The IRS publishes a full list in Publication 502—though not all items listed there are HSA-eligible, so check with your HSA provider when in doubt.

🧠 Important Note:

Most health insurance premiums are not considered qualified expenses, unless you’re paying for COBRA, certain types of long-term care insurance, or health coverage while receiving unemployment benefits.
