What is the income limit for pregnancy Medicaid in Texas, and how long does it last after the baby is born?

Short answer: Texas Medicaid for Pregnant Women covers income up to 198% of the federal poverty level ($5,445 per month for a household of four for 2026) and continues through the 12th month after the pregnancy ends.

Once a pregnant woman is approved, she stays continuously eligible through the end of the 12th month after the month the pregnancy ends, regardless of income changes, unless she withdraws, moves out of Texas, dies, or was approved in error or by fraud. When it ends, HHSC automatically tests her for other coverage.

Coverage can reach back up to three months before the application month (two months for applications made on or after January 1, 2027) if she had unpaid medical bills and met the rules then (but not before the month the pregnancy began). A baby born to a mother on Texas Medicaid is generally covered from birth through the month of the first birthday.

For an employee with group coverage, pregnancy Medicaid can still matter: Medicaid pays after the employer plan and may cover costs the plan leaves.
