Will Texas Medicaid and CHIP families have to renew every six months starting in 2027?

Short answer: No. The 2025 federal law’s six-month renewals, starting with renewals scheduled on or after January 1, 2027, apply only to expansion adults, and Texas has no expansion group; other groups stay on their existing renewal rules.

CMS’s summary of the 2025 law says section 71107 requires renewals every 6 months instead of every 12 months for people in the Medicaid adult (expansion) group, or the same population covered through an equivalent waiver, and that it does not change renewal requirements for any other eligibility group.

For Texas families, children’s Medicaid and CHIP still renew once every 12 months with 12 months of continuous eligibility for children. Do not repeat headlines about six-month checks to a Texas parent; it causes needless worry and can lead families to drop coverage they still have.

Texas CHIP does have an older “six-month income check” that is used for cost-sharing recalculation; for currently enrolled children, new income is not used to end eligibility mid-period.
