What renewal protections should a self-funded employer ask for on stop-loss?

Short answer: Ask specifically about a no-new-laser provision, a cap on renewal increases, renewal without a new signed disclosure, and how run-out or terminal coverage depends on renewing. Each is a separate promise with its own conditions, and none should be assumed from another.

Stop-loss is underwritten again every year. Without protection, a carrier can respond to a new diagnosis or large claim by adding a laser, raising rates sharply or raising the deductible for the whole group.

Features some carriers offer: no new lasers or increases to existing lasers at renewal, no signed disclosure form required at renewal, and a bridge renewal that extends the expiring contract’s run-out only if the employer renews. A no-new-laser promise may still allow a higher group-wide deductible, and a rate cap may not apply to every part of the program.

At initial placement, follow the carrier’s disclosure instructions accurately; an inaccurate disclosure can put reimbursement at risk. Start renewal early enough to have firm terms and an alternative.
