Short answer: Contact the drug plan and give it proof of Extra Help, telling the plan how many days of medicine the person has left. If that doesn’t fix it, call 1-800-MEDICARE, which can confirm the person’s Extra Help level and get the plan to correct it.
Medicare.gov’s steps when an Extra Help person is paying the wrong amount:
- Contact the drug plan. The plan may ask for proof that the person gets Extra Help so it can correct the cost-sharing.
- Tell the plan how many days of medication are left. The plan and Medicare try to fix it before the person runs out.
- Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048) to confirm the person’s level of Extra Help and get the costs fixed with the plan.
This happens most often right after someone qualifies, before the plan’s records are updated.
