Can I change my HSA contributions mid-year?

March 27, 2025January 29, 2026

Short answer: Yes. You can change your HSA contribution amount at any time during the year—even if contributions are made pre-tax through payroll—as long as you do not exceed the annual IRS limit.

Health Savings Account contributions are unusually flexible compared to other pre-tax benefits. You may start, stop, increase, or decrease your HSA contributions at any point during the year without needing a qualifying life event.

This flexibility applies even when HSA contributions are made through payroll on a pre-tax basis. Although HSAs are often offered through an employer’s Section 125 cafeteria plan, they are not subject to the same irrevocable election rules that apply to other cafeteria plan benefits.

For example, health insurance elections and health FSA elections made under a cafeteria plan generally cannot be changed mid-year unless you experience a qualifying event. HSA contributions are different. IRS rules require employers to allow employees to change their HSA contribution elections prospectively, typically at least on a monthly basis.

This means you can adjust your contributions in response to changes in income, medical expenses, or cash flow throughout the year, even if the contributions are deducted pre-tax from your paycheck.

While you can change the timing and amount of contributions, you are still responsible for ensuring that your total contributions for the year—including employer contributions—do not exceed the applicable IRS limit based on your coverage and eligibility.
