Does my house or car count against the Extra Help resource limit?

Short answer: No. The home, one car, a burial plot, up to $1,500 set aside for burial expenses, furniture and household and personal items are not counted. Checking, savings and retirement accounts, stocks and bonds are.

Medicare.gov lists what counts toward the Extra Help resource limit: money in checking, savings or retirement accounts, stocks and bonds. Not counted: the home, one car, a burial plot, up to $1,500 put aside for burial expenses, furniture, and other household and personal items.

On the income side, Social Security, pensions, wages, self-employment earnings, annuities, alimony, rental income, veterans benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits and workers’ compensation count. Not counted: SNAP, housing assistance, home energy assistance, disaster assistance, earned income tax credit payments, scholarships and education grants, medical treatment and drugs, victim compensation payments, and help from others with household expenses.

Because IRA and 401(k) balances count, someone with modest income but a sizable retirement account may not qualify. Social Security asks for those balances on the application.
