Health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding, and these services can be provided before and after birth. The no-cost rule applies to Marketplace plans and most other plans, except grandfathered ones.
Your health insurance plan must cover the cost of a breast pump, which may be a rental or a new one you keep; the plan can set guidelines on whether it is manual or electric and when you receive it. Because this falls under the ACA’s women’s preventive coverage, the plan shall, at a minimum provide coverage for and shall not impose any cost sharing requirements for these services in-network. Some plans ask for your doctor’s recommendation or pre-authorization, so check with your plan.
