Will Medicare put someone with Extra Help into a drug plan automatically?

Short answer: Yes. If someone qualifies for Extra Help and has no Medicare drug plan, Medicare enrolls them in one, and a notice tells them which. They can pick a different plan, and Medicare’s LI NET program gives temporary coverage until they are enrolled.

Medicare.gov: if someone qualifies for Extra Help and doesn’t already have a Part D plan, Medicare automatically enrolls them in one so they get the savings. The notice names the new plan and says they can choose a different one.

Check that the assigned plan covers the person’s drugs and pharmacies. If another plan fits better, the monthly enrollment period for people with Extra Help lets them move to a better-fitting standalone drug plan, effective the first of the next month.

Medicare’s Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition (LI NET) program gives temporary Part D coverage to people who qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid but aren’t in a drug plan yet, and may reimburse covered drugs they paid for after qualifying. LI NET: 1-800-783-1307.
