Can I use my HSA for dental and vision expenses?

March 27, 2025January 27, 2026

Short answer: Yes. Dental and vision care are qualified medical expenses, so you can use HSA funds tax-free for many related services and products.

The IRS treats many dental and vision expenses as qualified medical expenses, which means they can be paid for with Health Savings Account funds on a tax-free basis.

Qualified dental expenses generally include preventive and restorative care such as cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, root canals, orthodontia, dentures, and medically necessary dental surgery.

Qualified vision expenses typically include eye exams, prescription glasses, contact lenses, contact lens solution, and corrective eye procedures such as LASIK or PRK.

Some items do not qualify. Cosmetic dental procedures, such as teeth whitening, and non-prescription items like fashion eyewear or non-prescription sunglasses are not considered qualified medical expenses.

Because dental and vision costs are often not fully covered by insurance, HSAs are commonly used to pay these expenses with pre-tax dollars, reducing overall out-of-pocket costs.
